Cecilia Forest to Kirstenbosch Gardens, Skeleton Gorge Adventure – Secret Waterfalls & Mountain Beach
This adventure begins in the peaceful shade of Cecilia Forest, where the air is cool, the trees tower high, and the sound of birdsong sets the tone for the journey. We’ll ease into the hike along the Cecilia Contour Path, a scenic trail that winds gently across the mountain’s lower slopes with views that peek out over Constantia and the Southern Suburbs.
Soon, the forest offers up its first hidden gem—the Littlewood Waterfall. Cascading down mossy rocks into a tranquil pool, this tucked-away spot feels like nature’s own sanctuary. It’s the perfect pause to soak in the moment, snap a few photos, and enjoy the cool spray before the real climbing begins.
From here, the trail gradually shifts into the dramatic terrain of Skeleton Gorge. Dense indigenous forest surrounds you—ferns, wildflowers, and old-growth trees draped in shade. The path steepens into an adventurous ascent: scrambling over rocks, tackling wooden ladders, and following a stream that trickles down through the gorge. It’s a climb that feels both wild and rewarding, each step carrying you higher into Table Mountain’s mystical heart.
At the top of the gorge, the mountain opens up to reveal one of its best-kept secrets—the Hely-Hutchinson Reservoir, better known as “The Secret Beach.” With soft white sand and calm waters tucked high above the city, it’s a surreal mountaintop oasis. Here, you can rest your legs, enjoy the serenity, or even dip in for a refreshing swim. Note: reaching the beach requires an additional ascent of about 1 hour, but the reward is more than worth it.
After soaking up the magic of the mountain’s hidden beach, we’ll make our way down through Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. Emerging from the forest, the trail eases into open, manicured landscapes bursting with indigenous plant life. It’s the perfect way to end—moving from wild mountain forest to one of the most beautiful botanical gardens in the world.
This loop blends waterfalls, forest climbs, a hidden beach, and the iconic Kirstenbosch exit—an adventure that truly captures the diverse spirit of Table Mountain.
