Cecilia Forest to Kirstenbosch Gardens, Skeleton Gorge Adventure – Secret Waterfalls & Mountain Beach
Embark on an exceptional adventure beginning in the tranquil shade of Cecilia Forest, where towering trees and the soothing sounds of birdsong create an inviting atmosphere for your journey. The experience starts along the Cecilia Contour Path, a scenic trail that gently traverses the lower slopes of the mountain, offering panoramic views over Constantia and the Southern Suburbs.
Early in the hike, you will discover the Littlewood Waterfall, a secluded gem cascading over moss-covered rocks into a serene pool. This peaceful sanctuary is an ideal spot to pause, capture memorable photos, and enjoy the refreshing spray before continuing the ascent.
The route then transitions into the dramatic landscape of Skeleton Gorge. Surrounded by dense indigenous forest, including ferns, wildflowers, and mature trees, the trail becomes more challenging, featuring rock scrambles, wooden ladders, and a stream that meanders through the gorge. This invigorating climb offers a rewarding sense of adventure as you ascend into the heart of Table Mountain.
Upon reaching the summit of the gorge, you will be greeted by the Hely-Hutchinson Reservoir, also known as "The Secret Beach." This unique mountaintop oasis features soft white sand and tranquil waters, providing a surreal setting high above the city. It is the perfect place to rest, enjoy the peaceful surroundings, or take a refreshing swim. Please note that reaching the beach requires an additional ascent of approximately one hour, but the experience is exceptionally rewarding.
After enjoying the mountain’s hidden beach, the descent leads through the renowned Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. Emerging from the forest, the trail opens into beautifully manicured landscapes rich with indigenous flora, offering a picturesque conclusion to your adventure.
This loop seamlessly combines waterfalls, forest climbs, a secluded beach, and the iconic exit through Kirstenbosch—an experience that truly embodies the diverse spirit of Table Mountain.
